Hikers Tip! What are FRS and GMRS Radios? These handheld radios provide a convenient way for family and friends to stay in touch while on the go. Two way radios allow users to increase their fun and safety by staying in touch.
For the first time, business band frequencies are available to the general public in the newly approved FRS (Family Radio Service) and GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) bands. Both FRS and GMRS are offered in handheld versions only. FRS and GMRS radios are not compatible with CB radios.
FRS offers 14 channels that operate between the frequencies of 462.5 and 467.7 Mhz (megahertz). FRS offers quiet UHF FM performance for a range of up to 2 miles using the maximum legal output of 500 mW (milli-watts). The signal from FRS radios offers less distortion, better signal reception in crowded environments and stronger penetration through buildings and other structures. No license is required to operate FRS radios.
GMRS is similar, but includes slightly different frequencies and a higher power output. Motorola GMRS radios offer 15 channels and 2.3 watts of transmit power which provides a range of up to 5 miles. Seven of the channels are shared with FRS radios, and the remaining eight channels are strictly GMRS frequencies. Offered by Cobra & Motorola in an ultra-compact size featuring contemporary styling the FRS and GMRS are perfect for outdoor enthusiasts and active families.
To use GMRS radios, you must apply for a license from the FCC. No test is required, but there is a license fee.
